a line of time

well the red river runs through you
the cold snow and the northwind too
you're a line of time and a shot of truth
and you're everywhere now

learned to walk and then you learned to run
spilled the borders of america
chased the moonrise and the setting sun
and you're everywhere now

you saw the corners and you fled the rain
mothered children and you felt their pain
time grew older but you never changed
you just kept on goin'

Some say life'll get the best of you
it takes things you never want it to
but there ain't nothing that you can do
just watch them going

it was hard enough to come to you
and it was harder still to leave it's true
but i gotta do what i gotta do
and you're everywhere now

so i said goodbye and i hit the road
it was foggy land and my heart was cold
but the miles were kind or so i'm told
I just watched them goin

but I'll see you in the break of day
and in my dreams when i'm half awake
think about you always
and you're everywhere now

graceland

Sitting on the free library computer
Posting pictures of poster kids from '67
you can't be a ranch hand, tourist, or rock god
as you nod your head inside it's space
tracing the lyricism of a cynical mysticism
past the opened graces of some little mistake

And I can't pardon any unintended or open-
ended recitations of last nights stagger brained
hair tied black eyed egg beater
It's a meter off the ocean floor and made of cedar
chips and blinking lights.  it's a garbage dump baby
and I came out here to hump it to freedom.
